Ode to sports

Firstly, I must say, I was surprised to be chosen as sports online editor, because sports was never my main interest. But it’s undeniable, sports are very important in most people’s lives.

Even if you don’t know the names of premier league players or do not have a clue what Alex Ferguson looks like, you may still enjoy playing football with friends or even support your country in an event such as the World Cup.

Sports journalism is one the most important parts of a paper. Can you imagine reading The Guardian, The Sun or even a lifestyle magazine without a sports page or supplement? That would be impossible, mainly because sports stories usually generate interest among readers, not only sports fans.

Look at the World Cup or Olympics for example, when they are on, they dominate the news agenda, and this simple fact shows how important sports, and its coverage are.

There, that’s my ode to sports. I must admit, I’m slightly converted.
