Most people think burlesque is something best left to Dita Von Teese. There's no denying she is amazing, but it is accessible to us all, even better, you don't need to go too far to find it because it’s right here at UAL.
Started last year, the Burlesque Society is dedicated to bringing deliciously sin-sational, tantalizing, and glamorous expert-tease to UAL for your pleasure!
It encompasses all aspects of burlesque from the sexy pin-up look and retro music, to the DIY culture that is inherent in its vintage, nostalgic roots.
Sample the delights of London's burlesque scene by attending the events the society hosts, like nights out to burlesque shows, from the big productions to the small stages to see all forms of of this decadent showcase.
The society offers fan dancing, striptease and nipple tassel twirling classes for aspiring dancers or anyone who just wants to try something new.
Learn tips and tricks on how to get the perfect pin-up look by attending vintage hair and make-up sessions. The workshops show you how to use all the essential burlesque tools such as boas, gloves, stockings, and if you're feeling especially provocative, making your very own nipple tassels.
Body Confident
Renowned for confidence building, burlesque will have you appreciating your body, while learning a few tricks of the trade.
Caroline Kent, President of the Society and a student on the BA Fashion Journalism course at LCF, became interested in burlesque as a continuation of her fascination with vintage clothing; burlesque, giving her room to express herself and feel good about her looks.
It's not just for the girls however, men are just as much a part of the burlesque scene, both as members of the audience and performers, and are actively encouraged to join.
Members can get involved as much or as little as they want. Come, watch performances and be part of the nostalgic retro scene or use the society as a platform to practice your skills as a photographer, make-up artist, fashion designer, graphic designer, set designer and so on.
Or you might want to go the whole nine-yards and learn the art of provocative shimmying, burning off the calories whilst looking good to boot.
Taste a little naughtiness and join the UAL Burlesque Society for £2.50 either on the Student Union website, or at the SU in Davies Street.
