Review: Roxy Bar and Screen

by Hannah Vickers

From the outside, Roxy Bar and Screen doesn’t seem like anything unique, however - as they say - appearances can be deceiving.

The bar/restaurant with cinema venue, situated on Borough High Street is certainly an unusual concept.

Inside is dimly lit and has a candle on each table giving the room a warm and cosy feel. Toward the back leather sofas are grouped, each with a table in front, all facing a massive cinema screen.

The bar staff are very friendly and helpful, and this certanly adds to the relaxed feel of the place.

You buy your tickets for the film at the bar with your drinks and get a stamp to show you have paid your £3 entrance fee.

Good value for money

Along with our tickets, a friend and I bought two vodka and cokes which came to a grand total of £12. This was great value considering the fact that the drinks glasses were unusually large.

Hot food is also served so you get to eat while you watch the film; it all looked very nice and with decent sized portions, you won’t go hungry. Ice-cream is sold during the interval which again, just adds to the homely feel of the place.

A good tip is to arrive early because it fills up fast and you may find yourself left fighting for a sofa. The whole atmosphere of the place makes you feel like you’re at home snuggled up on the sofa rather then stiffly sat in a cinema with leg cramp.

The film showing was Sam Raimi horror, Drag Me To Hell. Starring Alison Lohman and Lorna Raver, it tells the story of a bank loan officer who finds herself cursed and literally dragged to hell by an elderly gypsy woman who she was instructed to evict.

It was very jumpy throughout the film but satirical in places, which I wasn’t expecting at all.

I had a great time at Roxy’s and will be going again with some more friends.
