Glee | TV review

by Fernando Augusto

Students on the stage of a musical TV show called GleeGlee is about a group of underdog teenagers who want to take part in the school’s choir (the Glee club) and are guided by a sweet and optimistic teacher, Will (Matthew Morrison).

This might sound or look like a High School Musical copycat, but actually it is much better.

They may dance and sing like in the Disney show, but some of the songs include the sexually charged Push It (by Salt-N-Pepa) or even Rehab, by Amy Winehouse, which are definitely not Disney material.

With its killer dialogue, especially the lines delivered by Sue (Jane Lynch), who plays a scary cheerleading coach:  ‘’You think this is hard? Try being waterboarded, that’s hard!’’ being a personal favourite.

Glee is truly a gem, and it’s great that it’s being recognized as that: the second season was announced by Fox recently.

Impact

The Glee effect is invading the music charts as well, their version of Don’t Stop Believing is riding high in the UK charts, and other versions, of Take A Bow and Gold Digger are selling well too.

Of course the characters are still very stereotyped and it’s not the most original story in the world, but Glee is good fun, camp and dare I say, even cutting-edge if you consider what teenagers have been watching or listening to in the last five years or so.

You don’t get Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) being performed in the middle of an American football game by a gay teenager on telly everyday, do you?
