Careers Advice with Julia Yates
Hello Julia. I’m enjoying my degree course but have realised that I don’t want a career in the creative industries.
Should I cut my losses and quit my course now?
Be careful
Be cautious about the idea of quitting your course, especially if you are enjoying it and doing ok.
Leaving your course half-way through means that you won’t have anything tangible to show for your time at university and if you choose to do another degree course it’s likely to end up being pretty expensive.
Besides, a creative course can teach you a range of skills that you can apply to all sort of different fields – things like team work, research skills and creative problem solving.
Nearly half of graduate jobs are open to graduates from any degree course.
Have you got a clear idea of the field that you would like to go into? Many professional qualifications can be done as post-graduate courses, such as teaching, and many more, such as management, need no relevant qualification.
If you’re not sure what kinds of jobs would suit you, do make an appointment with one of our career coaches at Creative Careers (www.arts.ac.uk/student/careers) or have a go at the ‘What Jobs Would Suit Me?’ programme at www.propsects.ac.uk for ideas.
