Celebrating International Women's Day

by Anna Davies

Film director Kathryn BigelowTo coincide with the 100th International Women’s Day on Monday 8 March, Birds Eye View is hosting a week of events celebrating women in film.

Screenings of documentaries, feature films and shorts will take place at London’s BFI Southbank and Institute Contemporary Arts (ICA) every day until Friday.

The festival kicked off last Thursday 4 March, with a screening of the award-winning Hurt Locker directed by Kathryn Bigelow, who made history when she became the first woman ever to win the Academy Award for Direction.

The festival closing party on Thursday night in the ICA theatre will include ‘Heavy Pencil’ – an event in association with creative duo Jiggery Pokery.

The two artists will produce artwork adhering to the night’s theme of ‘Femme Fatale’ in front of a live audience.

Up-and-coming musician Psychologist will provide the soundtrack to which the live draw will take place – performing covers of a selection of songs from iconic females.

Lauren Davies, one half of Jiggery Pokery says: “I’m really proud to be involved with this event. As female artists we are always willing to support the work of strong, independent women.”

Birds Eye View was founded in 2002 as a short film event. In 2004 it registered as a charity and in 2005 launched the UK’s first major women’s film festival.
