Spanish Grand Prix Preview

by Haris Elias & Michael Landon

Fernando Alonso in Ferrari car The European leg of 2010’s Formula One campaign gets the green light this Sunday in Barcelona.

Some are predicting that the race, hosted at the Circuit De Catalunya, will reveal the true pecking order for the rest of the season as top three drivers go into the European races separated by just 11 points in the Drivers' Championship table.

McLaren’s Jenson Button, current world champion and winner of the Spanish Grand Prix last year, tops the current standings with 60 points, just 10 points clear of Mercedes GP driver Nico Rosberg, while Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton are just a point behind occupying third and fourth place respectively.

Naturally, the focus of the home crowd will be on local hero Fernando Alonso as he attempts to win in front of his compatriots for the second time in his career, following his triumph back in 2003 whilst driving for Renault.

Victory for McLaren?

Alonso's move to Ferrari from the French outfit at the end of last year provoked new hope amongst his faithful followers. However, prolonged engine troubles has hampered his campaign so far.

McLaren, on the other hand, will be optimistic for victory on Sunday after their one-two finish in Shanghai last month.

Button’s first place finish, with Lewis Hamilton in second, ensured that the British-based team top the Constrctors Championship.

Meanwhile, multiple World Champion Michael Schumacher will attract plenty of interest in Spain, not  because his Mercedes team announced the 41-year-old will have an upgraded car for Sunday’s race but with an improved weight distribution system and areodynamic improvements.

The veteran driver has been out-qualified and beaten by team-mate Nico Rosberg in all four races of his comeback season so far, collecting just ten points in the process.

The German will be desperate to arrest that slide this weekend.
