Winter Trends: Glasses

In the 1960's if you were unlucky enough to fail your eye exam, you were prescribed NHS spectacles. The clunky plastic frame and thick lenses made famous by Buddy Holly and made many a child the target of playground bullying.

However, times change. Fast-forward 40 years and something has happened. The heavy framed glasses are being dusted off and worn by people with 20/20 vision just to be hip. Yes, geek has become chic again.

Models on the Charles Anastace catwalk for spring 2011 were all sporting rounded tortoise shell glasses. On Michael Kors catwalk the classic NHS frames have reigned supreme since 2008.

Even Hollywood hotties like Justin Timberlake are wearing their specs out and about with pride. His square black frames with a slight curve to the middle make him look stylish whilst helping him to overcome his shortsighted vision.

Here are some tips if you want to try the trend yourself:

For boys, almost anything goes. Wear glasses with your baggy jeans, to give a casual look a twist. Combine them with smart wear to achieve the 60's chic look.

For girls, a safe choice is to try out the Michael Kors catwalk look. As the great man himself said: “You want a tip on looking hot? Wear reading glasses and a fitted dress.” Accessorize with a slash of bright lipstick and get ready to bring back the specs appeal!"
