Q&A with marathon runner Laila Kassam
LCC Administrator Laila Kassam ran the Marathon back in April. Bryan Galvan caught up with her for a quick Q&A session.
Why are you running, and who are you running for?
Running the marathon is a challenge of a life time. I am running for the International Childcare Trust.
How is your fundraising going this year?
I’ve received overwhelming generousity from all. The target was £2000 but I have raised nearly £3000 with donations still pouring in.
How did it feel to run the race?
The atmosphere was electric and I felt very proud and honoured to run with over 37,000 runners, all raising money for a worthwhile cause.
Did you believe yourself to be in good shape before the race?
Yes absolutely. I had been training for a year.
Can you tell us about your training?
My training started last May with a short run of one mile on Wednesdays and a long run Sundays, gradually building up to 14 miles before the race, including strength training in the gym.
Were you intimidated by the distance?
Having started training gradually 26.2 miles seemed easy.
Did you have any special tactics worked out for the race day?
I knew I had to keep my mind focused on finishing, despite suffering with blisters on the soles of both of my feet halfway through the race.
What kept you motivated during the race?
The crowds calling out my name, my supporters and thinking of the children who would benefit from ICT.
What got you involved in marathons?
Last year I was watching the marathon and I sent a text to my trainer in South Afria saying: "I wish I could run the marathon. He replied saying: "You will run it next year. If you would like to let me know!"
Any tips for other marathoners trying to fundraise?
Let everyone you talk to know that you are running the marathon.
