World Cup favourites

by John Naldrett

The general consensus is that England are one of the favourites to lift the World Cup trophy this summer but here are three nations who would stop them from winning the tournament.

Argentina

The Argentines always bring a strong squad to international tournaments and this squad is arguably as strong as any they’ve had before.

For a start, they have the man considered the world’s best player - Lionel Messi - and they are managed by the former world’s best player - Diego Maradona - as coach.

However, Maradona’s eccentric personality has provided some doubt as to Argentina’s ability to win the entire tournament.

Added to Messi, the Argentines can boast talent such as Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez and Walter Samuel. Other nations should beware.

Brazil

The Brazilians traditionally bring a very strong squad to the World Cup and this year will be no different.

Although they have been accused of lacking the samba style of Brazilian teams of the past, this side will still take some beating.

They are the reigning Confederations Cup and Copa America champions and can boast world stars, such as Kaka, Robinho, Dani Alves and Maicon.

Italy

Italy are the reigning World Champions and will be a feared opponent this summer. They base their style on a solid defence and immaculate technique.

They have the man who is widely considered the best goalkeeper in the World, Gigi Buffon, and they have a wealth of experience throughout their squad.

Daniele De Rossi is a respected midfield general and players like Cameronesi and Cannavaro have played at the top level for more than a decade.

Spain

Spain have been installed as the outright favourites for the World Cup and justifiably so. They are the reigning European Champions having blown away the competition with their flowing style of football.

The have arguably the best strike force in World Football in David Villa and Fernando Torres as well as the ultimate playmaker in Xavi Hernandez. Carlos Puyol is a formidable defender and Iker Casillas is considered one of the World’s best goalkeepers.
