Anticipating Bar-Tur Award winners
The closing date for one of this year’s most exciting photographic competitions has already been and gone, and we are now anticipating the winners of the Bar-Tur Award.
The explosion of art created by the University of the Arts London students and alumni produced entries inspired by themes including environment, communication, identities and lifestyle.
Ann-Lesley Bar-Tur
Launched in memory of British artist and Chelsea College of Art and Design alumna Ann-Lesley Bar-Tur (1947-1984), the award has already attracted more than 900 submissions.
Ann-Lesley’s husband, Amnon Bar-Tur, photographer, property developer and also a former UAL student, is one of the judges.
Inspiration behind the award
Commenting on the idea that inspired the award, Mr Bar-Tur said: “It all came about during dinner with Nigel Carrington, who is the rector of the University of the Arts London.
“I knew that any help that a student can get to expose his or her work is absolutely critical to career development. A competition like this would make an important contribution to their portfolio.
“Ann was a painter and we lost her when she was very young. I think she’d feel similar to the way I do, in the sense that it’s important to give the students as much exposure as possible to the commercial and art communities.
“She’d be unbelievably delighted with the launch of this award. So this is a good opportunity do something positive in her honour, something that I hope will be helpful for students and alumni. Hopefully we’ll be doing it every year.”
Opportunity for participants
Mr Bar-Tur is currently in the process of launching the Big Eye Gallery at New York’s Lincoln Centre. He is looking for competition entrants to get involved in the gallery.
The Bar-Tur award winners will be announced on July 4. Watch this space…
