UPDATED: Right to Ride petition

by Arts London News

Sign our petition to help make London's roads safer for student cyclists.

Why is this important?

Following on from the success of 2011's Right to Ride we are now moving into phase two of our campaign. During the first phase we successfully obtained over 1000 signatures on our petition and received messages of support from the management of all UAL campuses as well as heads of student bodies.

To protect the safety of cyclists traveling through the following five cycling accident black spots, we, the undersigned, would like to request that the management of all London universities and their students lobby Transport for London (TfL) to prioritise the redevelopment of these dangerous interchanges.

The five black spots are as follows:

1. St. George’s Road/ London Road/ Elephant & Castle Junction

Universities directly affected: London College of Communication, Camberwell College of Arts, London Southbank University, Central Saint Martins and Southwark College.

2. Clapham Road/ Kennington Park Road/ Camberwell Road Junction

Universities directly affected: London College of Communication, Camberwell College of Arts, Southwark College, London Southbank University, King’s College London.

3. Waterloo Road/ Stamford St/ York Road Junction

Universities directly affected: King’s College London, London School of Economics and Political Science, London Film School.

4. King’s Cross Junction

Universities directly affected: Central St. Martins University of the Arts, City University London, Queen Mary University of London.

5. Hyde Park Corner

Universities directly affected: Imperial College London, Chelsea College of Art & Design, Royal College of Art, University of Westminster.

The lcc's go dutch initiative is where it needs to head. But i agree, the superhighways around elephant are a must, the roundabout it just a pain for cyclists. Let's hope someone of the right authority sees this and reads it.

Just recently moved to London and am cycling around a lot. One of the first things I heard on the news was about two cyclist being killed at a roundabout in south london. Even after recommendations to make the roundabout safer were ignored!!! Good Luck

Helmets also make cycling appear a far more risky activity than it is. Cars are the real danger and infrastructure that prioritise vehicle flow above the safety of cyclists and pedestrians.

Cyclists are also more likely to be hit by motorists when wearing a helmet as drivers give them less room. Helmeted cyclists also take more risks, as they believe (wrongly) that a helmet will protect them in a crash with a car.

As part of the regeneration of the area, the junction at King's Cross must be re-designed to make it safe for cyclists. No amount of "keeping your wits about you" will save cyclists from a hostile road layout like that one.

They should start by cleaning the road surrounding the KX site of gravel and sands.

To commute by bike has boomed in London and is still rising… But my main question is: Why is there not a law on wearing a helmet? and where are our cycling lanes? to keep us safe…

I have cause to bike across Elephant & Castle roundabout at least once a month. This roundabout, even for experienced cyclists such as myself, is both frightening and dangerous - contrary to Mayor's Johnson's scathing comments.
