Don't let Emma West ruin Christmas

by Petter Lundgren

I am spending Christmas in the capital and I cannot wait to be King of London for a few days.

In this metropolis, us immigrants learn two ‘rules’ – or clichés, if you like – quickly. The first is that “no-one in London is from London”. There is some truth in this, and Christmas, therefore, is a quiet, peaceful time.

I will walk down Regent Street as were it a film set. I will use public transport and get a seat. Every time.

The West End will be as joyous as the tourism posters suggest. The stores open for business will surely slash their prices early. Even one or two department stores may be bearable. Until Boxing Day.

And when I start to miss the bustle and buzz of the town, the rest of you will come back to fill the void.

I will moan in the mornings and take every backstreet I can in W1. Department stores will have to wait another year, at least.

But I will not mind. Not really. Because the second rule us immigrants learn here is that “no-one cares where you come from”. I can think of no better sentiment to justify this city’s overpopulation.

Exception to the rule

Like all rules, this one has exceptions. A notable and recent one is Emma West. If you have not yet watched the video of her racist tirade on a London tram, do so

There are many such unhappy examples to be found. But they remain exceptions.

I am lucky to have spent time in many places, and luckier to have friends from across this globe.

Many of them live in London, and all agree on this: not many places can match the mix of the capital of Britain. Not many cities showcase such acceptance of the multitude. Arguably, in no place are new acquaintances as likely to become friends.

I am, still, genuinely amazed by the make–up of this place. And I am positively surprised to have found few of my homeland’s closet-prejudices here.

The accepting spirit of Christmas permeates this city. Even when it is empty. All year round.

But, please do not read too much into my praise of the capital – do go home to your families. This Christmas in London is mine.

As for Emma West, please leave for the holidays. Then stay away.
