Your Views: Are You Green?

by Maryse Farag and Angela Galan

This week we asked for your views on whether you think you're consciously "green” and the actions you take, or know you should be taking to be more ecologically friendly.

"I'd run my car on vegetable oil if I could."
Nik Jones, 22, BA Fine Art, Camberwell

"I recycle as much as I can by throwing things in the right bins. I reuse plastic carrier bags as shopping bags. I do fly a lot so maybe I should travel only when necessary."
Martin Batt, 27, BA Graphic Design, CSM

"In the future I will make more of an effort to be environmentally conscious but at the moment I try not to go out of my way to ruin the environment like putting things in the right bin and not throw things on the ground."
Lance Boreham, 23, BA Magazine Publishing, LCC

"In practice, I tread lightly by cycling and taking public transport. I don't even drive. It's all about making conscious choices. I tend not to buy for the sake of it and only buy from sustainable people. I only buy what I need and if I don't need it then it doesn't happen."
Alina Moat, 38, MA Fashion and the Environment, LCF

"I find it harder to be consciously green when I’m away from home. It’s hard being in a different environment than at home, so I’m still getting used to the area and soon I’ll get into the routine. But it’s common sense to switch the lights off, reycle and put litter in the bin."
Emma Forster, 24, BA Film and Television, LCC

"I am aware of it but I don’t really do much towards it. I know I should recyle but I don’t do anything to help because it takes too much time and effort and I’m not bothered even though I should be."
Barbara Irvine, 19, FdA Beauty and Therapy, LC
F

"I only buy organic food and I try to make sure I eat all the food I buy and if I can't finish what's on my plate, most of the time I'll save it and eat it the next day rather than throw it away and waste it. Unlike some people who leave it in the fridge then forget it till after the "best by" or the "die by" date, then chuck it out."
Anna Burel, 24, BA Interior Design, Chelsea

"It’s too much hassle, I don’t cycle, I don’t have a bike and I wouldn’t even know where to put it. I leave my TV on standby too often because I forget to turn it off or I’m too lazy if I'm going to be watching TV again later the same day. I check my bank online so I guess I don’t use paper. Students have very busy lifestyles so it’s time consuming to think about the environment."
Kerry Herbert, 19, FdA Beauty and Therapy, LCF

"I admit I'm not as environmentally friendly as I could be. I put my computer on standby all the time instead of switching it off because it takes too long to start up again, but it’s definitely better than leaving it on all the time!"
James Lewis-Griffiths, 19, BA Animation, LCC

"I think I’m environmentally conscience; I cycle and use email more than I print stuff. I turn the lights off every time I leave the room."
Daniel Tracey, 23, BA Graphic Design, CSM
