Have your say: The Hub

by Maryse Farag

Entrance to the new Hub at HolbornDue to the new Crossrail transport system, the university is moving The Hub from Davies Street to a new building in Holborn by March 2010.

The current Hub has no sports facilities or social space to accommodate all UAL students, although the university and the SU had an agreement to provide more student spaces at the new Hub. However the university says it may not be able to accommodate these facilities.

This week we asked for your views on the way the university is handling the relocation of The Hub and how you feel about claims about the lack of consideration for students' views:

"The current Hub is pitiful considering the number of students at this university. UAL doesn't feel like one university because we don't have a building where we can all meet. The move to Holborn could be great if there is more space for us."
Naia John, 18, BA Fashion Management, LCF

"The whole point of a university is it belongs to its students. So if the collective voice of the student body is not a fundamental force in the making of decisions then something is seriously wrong."
Jessica Allen, 19, FdA Marketing & Advertising

"The student Hub is part of the university's package in promoting the university. I hope they can stay close to their terms sited as part of this promotion and continue to provide what they may view as "unnecessary costs" in light of its benefits in the long run. As an international student, I'm paying £11,900 not only for a degree but also to have a great student experience."
Daria Loktiuva, 20, FdA Tailoring, LCF

"If the plans go ahead for The Hub as it is now, there is a real justification for demanding the resignation of top management due to a consistent and blatant disregard for the student voice. The handling of Camberwell's reshuffles two years ago is an example that justifies a vote of no confidence in UAL management. It was very expensive and without much gained, we suffered a reduction in space and the new bar never matched the old one so was generally abandoned. The only student consultation that took place was after the work was completed. I fear exactly the same thing is happening now." Charlie Armstrong, 23, BA Graphic Design, Camberwell

"I've had little experience at Davies Street, but I've seen the space and I know the facilities The Hub offers are comprehensive. I'm not worried about the move, but more concerned the function will cease to exist. We already suffer from lack of space so cutting down on space is such a bad excuse for not spending money."
Boo Wallin, 34, BA Graphic Design, CSM

"Everyone has gotten used to the current Hub and now we're getting told we're moving with fewer facilities. If we're not going to get more of the same space that we have in Davies Street then it's pointless. There won't be enough room for students who want to volunteer or get jobs at the SU."
Luke Moorhead, 19, BA Menswear, CSM
