Trends of the summer: stripes

Get in line for a linear look this summer with classic stripes. No matter what the fashion era dictates, they’ll always be trendy and summer 2010 will especially see to their strong revival.

Though some believe stripes started off as prison costume lines, others credit its origins to the legendary Coco Chanel who, in 1910, introduced a masculine look to her women’s line. Inspired by French sailors, she called it La Marinière.

These nautical shirts have become the signature looks that are seen on the catwalk from designers aplenty, including Tommy Hilfiger and Anna Sui (both of whom played with horizontal stripes for Spring/Summer 2008), Sonia Rykiel, and Jean-Paul Gaultier, who brought the theme to the limelight in the ‘80s and has stuck with it since.

Recently, Givenchy did a number of striped jackets for its Spring/Summer 2010 collection. And let’s not forget LAMB and Emporio Armani, where sailor tees are matched with satin pants.

Though the original white and navy top will remain an iconic fashion item, there have been more colourful offerings, as well as modern reinterpretations that include sequins and shoulder pads.

Today there are many high street alternatives, from blazers to dresses and even playsuits. And because stripes are so versatile – not to mention unisex, too – you can style your outfit any way you want.

You could go for a rock style (think sailor tee, denim shorts and wellies – just like Kate Moss) or pair it with boyfriend jeans for something more laid-back. Or what about a romantic, bohemian look with a chiffon skirt?

The advantage of the Marinière look is that it can be androgynous, feminine or masculine, depending on one’s style. So why not take this classic idea and be bold? We’ve spotted some students who know exactly how to complete that sailor look.
